I take a person-centered approach which is based in unconditional positive regard and empathy. I’m a connector and I’m very personable, so I like that DBT encourages realness and connection. It feels more human than other modalities. Typically, clients have seen a lot of providers so they’re understandably skeptical and on guard when they come to see me. Because I create a safe and accepting environment, their walls come down fairly quickly.
My Story
I was a social worker for about 20 years, first working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) and then with foster children. During the pandemic, I decided to go back to school for my masters in counseling.
I think most people in this field are “wounded healers.” Earlier in life, I was naturally the person people always came to but because of that, I enabled people and took on the responsibility of the fixer. Through that wounding came great healing lessons, one of which is that I can’t fix people but I can equip them with tools and empower them to navigate things on their own.
Many clients I see who have experienced trauma and struggle with anxiety lack a solid support system. They may not have a lot of emotional connections and limited, if any, hobbies and interests. I know what it’s like to receive counseling for trauma and I want them to feel like at least one person is supporting them.
My passion is working with children, adolescents, and women who have experienced trauma and are trying to find hope, healing, and wholeness.
