Trauma is anytime we are in a situation that we cannot easily escape where either we feel unsafe or our needs aren’t being met. Missing chunks of time from the past is very common with trauma. You do not need to get it back in order to effectively move through trauma and heal. One of my rules with trauma work is that we’re never going to unpack anything that we can’t safely pack back up. When we put things where they belong and give them that space, we can empower clients to self soothe and safely go back into the world.
My Story
I’ve known I wanted to work with art and people since I was 15. To me, the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, it’s community. I’m big on warmth, community and building trust.
My specialties are trauma work, art therapy and EMDR. I work with adults, first responders, those in drug and alcohol recovery, LGBTQ folks, makers struggling with burnout, survivors of human trafficking, and those navigating trauma and CPTSD (Chronic PTSD). I’m a member of the LGBTQ community myself and I am very trans-affirming.
My belief is that for folks with intense trauma, we can’t guarantee that someone will leave a counseling session feeling happy, but I always want them to leave more empowered. Telling part of their story, learning clinical terms, touching or delving into their trauma, getting some tools, learning something new — those can all be empowering.
I have a firm “no shame” policy. (If shame were a good catalyst for change there would be no addicts.) I like to create a peaceful counseling environment with plants, some virtual candle lighting when appropriate — collaborative and empowering.
